Police were not negligent in Avijit killing, Boishakh harassment

Police have shrugged off any allegation of negligence on their part when writer Avijit was killed and women were sexually harassed during Pahela Boishakh celebration on Dhaka University campus.
A meeting of parliamentary standing committee on home affairs on Sunday said that police had informed the ministry about their position in these two cases.
The committee discussed police investigation reports on two the cases, said Tipu Munshi the president of the parliamentary committee, which also asked police officials to be cautious in commenting on media.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner on February 26 reported the committee about the formation of a three-member body to investigate into police action when blogger Avijit had been hacked to death.
The report said that police officials had reached the scene within 2-3 minutes after being informed by local vendor near Suhrawady Udyan’s gate.
Police actions during these two incidents were widely criticised as criminals had got away from the scene in spite of the presence of security officials in the close proximity.
