Mumbai: 81 people have been confirmed dead after consuming spurious liquor at the Laxmi Nagar slum here in Malwani in Mumbai.

Police said they have taken into custody two more persons identified as Fransis Thomas Demalo , and Salim Mahboob Shaikh, both residents of nearby area where spurious liquor was sold taking the total number of arrests to five.

Earlier, police had arrested three persons in this connection—Raju Hanmanta Pascar, Donald Robert Patel and Gautam Harte who were produced before a local court which remanded them in police custody till 26 June.

The incident occurred at Laxmi Nagar slum near Gamdevi Jurassic park in suburban Malad on Wednesday night and the victims started showing symptoms soon after.

Late Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the incident and sought a report within two days.

The victims, from very poor backgrounds, mostly living in Laxmi Nagar slums and employed as low-paying drivers, daily labourers etc, had consumed the cheap country liquor at a bar in Rathodi village here on Wednesday night.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria has asked for a report on the incident from local police and ordered that the illicit liquor trade must be completely stopped.

This is the second biggest illicit hooch tragedy to hit the state since 23 December 2004, when hooch claimed 87 lives in two separate incidents in Mumbai.
