SUST teachers confine VC

Sylhet: A section of pro-Awami League teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) confined its Vice Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan to his office since Monday morning demanding his removal.
Campus sources said the VC came to the campus around 8 pm to join his work after a two-month leave.
As the news of VC’s joining spread around, a section of pro-Awami League teachers started gathering on the campus and some 50 teachers under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonai Udbhuddo Sikkhak Forum’ led by its convener Professor Dr Syed Shamsul Alam put the VC’s office under lock and key.
The teachers said they will continue their programme until the VC steps down.
The VC remained confined to his office till filing of the report at about 3:00pm.
Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, said police have been put on alert to avert further trouble on the campus.
On 23 April, VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan went on a two-month leave amid movement of a pro-Awami League teachers’ panel demanding his removal.
On 20 April, 35 teachers of Shahjalal University for Science and Technology (SUST), including renowned author Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, resigned from their administrative posts demanding resignation of their Vice Chancellor.
On 13 April, an altercation broke out when 19 teachers from Physics and Geography and Environment departments of the university went to hold talks with the VC over space allocation between the two departments.
Following the altercation, Professor Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruk of Physics and Professor Dr Sharif Mohammad Sharafuddin of Geography and Environment resigned as heads of the two departments.
A deadlock was created on the campus following the resignation of the heads of two departments.
