FBI to assist BD detectives in Niloy murder probe

Dhaka: The US Bureau of Federal Investigation (FBI) will assist local detectives to identify the culprits and unearth the motive behind the killing of blogger Niladri Chaterjee alias Niloy.
Sources at the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said an FBI official already contacted a senior DB official on Saturday morning over phone expressing their interest to help local investigators probe the sensational murder incident.
Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DB-East) Mahbubur Rahman said the FBI offered them assistance in the investigation into the blogger murder. ‘After consulting our higher authorities, we’ve already given them consent over the matter,’ he said.
An FBI team is scheduled arrive at the DB headquarters on Sunday morning. ‘We’ll sit at a meeting with them to discuss the technical and technological supports we need to unearth the mystery behind the killing,’ the DC (DB-South) said.
Blogger Niloy, a resident of a rented flat on the 4th floor of a multi-storey building at Goran in the capital, was hacked to death by a group of assailants on Friday afternoon.
Ashamoni, wife of the victim, filed the case against the four unidentified people with Khilgaon Police Station in this connection on Friday night.
Earlier, the FBI assisted the DB in the investigation of of blogger Avijit Roy killing. Avijit Roy, son of noted physicist Ajoy Roy and founder of Mukto-Mona blog, was killed and his wife Rafida Afrin Banya injured seriously as unidentified criminals stabbed them near TSC on the Dhaka University campus on 26 February.
