Domestic help tortured: Magistrate stripped off judicial power

Satkhira: Judicial Magistrate of Satkhira Nurul Islam was withdrawn from the judicial proceedings on Thursday following the rescue of a 10-year-old ‘tortured’ domestic help from his residence on Wednesday afternoon.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Saha told UNB that the Law Secretary and the department concerned have been informed about the rescue of the minor girl from the magistrate’s residence while the magistrate was withdrawn from the judicial proceedings on Thursday.
A general diary was filed with Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident, said officer-in-charge of the police station Emdad Sheikh.
Meanwhile, Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Saha sent a protest letter to the Satkhira Press Club president/general secretary claiming that most of the media published exaggerated news about the rescue of the minor girl from the judicial magistrate’s residence.
In the letter, he mentioned that there were injury marks in the minor girl’s body because she fell onto the bathroom floor and got electrocuted.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, police rescued 10-year-old domestic help Bithi, daughter of Rasul Ali, from Judicial Magistrate Nurul Islam’s residence and admitted her to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Locals said they spotted the girl crying for water from the balcony of the rented house of Magistrate Nurul Islam around 1pm and informed police.
A team from Satkhira Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot.
But inmates of the magistrate’s residence allegedly did not allow the lawmen in. When the information spread around, Satkhira’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Saha, Judicial Magistrate-1 Shimul Kumar Biswas, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle) Anwar Syed and other high officials of the local administration appeared at the spot. The house inmates then reportedly opened the door.
As the housemaid was rescued from Nurul Islam’s residence, she bore many marks injuries, including burn and beating, in different parts of her body.
However, the girl denied that she was tortured and even was reluctant to show the injury marks. Neighbours alleged that Nurul Islam and his wife Natasha used to torture the girl in their house.
