2 priests of Khulna churches get death threat

Khulna: Two priests of two different churches in Khulna received death threat over mobile phone from an unknown caller on Friday.  

Reverent Tomas Joy Sarker, chief of Church of God’s Bangladesh and also executive secretary of the Khulna chapter of Bangladesh Interchurch Pastors & Leaders Fellowship, and Romen Boiragi, bishop of Khulna Divisional Catholic Church, received the death threats at about 1:11pm from an unknown number over mobile phone.

Phoning Tomas Joy from the number 01675663814, the caller asked him and Romen to stay prepared for death within 72 hours.

Police said security has been beefed up around the churches and their adjoining areas, Shia mosque in Khalishpur, in front of ‘Bishop House’ at Sonadanga and Baptist Church following the incident.  

Sonadanga Model Police officer in-charge Sukumar Biswas confirming that said the two pastors were yet to file any general dairy in this connection.  

Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) commissioner Nibas Chandra Majhi said they were trying to arrest the culprit.

Earlier on Thursday evening, a group of 4-5 unidentified gunmen stormed a Shia mosque at Haripur village in Shibganj upazila of Bogra district and opened fire on the devotees while they were offering maghrib prayers, leaving its muezzin dead and three others, including the imam, injured.

Besides, 10 pastors of Rangpur district received death threat through a letter on Thursday afternoon.
