BNP man killed in reported gunfight after arrest

Meherpur: A local BNP leader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area of Sadar uapzila in Meherpur early on Monday, reports local news agency.
The deceased is Ramjan Sheikh, a resident of the village of Rajnagar in Sadar upazila.
Ramjan was the vice-president of Pirojpur union unit BNP.
The Sadar police said Ramjan was arrested from the upazila at about 8:30pm on Sunday.
Later, police along with Ramjan conducted a drive at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area at about 2:30am on Monday to recover firearms.
During the drive, some of Ramjan’s associates attacked and fired gunshots at the police members in a bid to free Ramjan when the law enforcers retaliated, triggering a gunfight.
Ramjan was caught in the line of fire and critically injured while his associates managed to flee the scene.
Later, Ramjan was taken to Maherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police also recovered one light gun, two bullets and some sharp weapons from the spot.
Police said Ramjan was wanted in several cases including those for attacking police and planning to carry out subversive activities.
