BCL infighting in Ctg, Thakurgaon, Sylhet leaves 31 injured
Dhaka: At least 31 people were injured in separate clashes between different factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Chittagong, Thakurgaon and Sylhet on Monday.
In Chittagong, at least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Central Shaheed Minar in the city at noon.
Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said an altercation ensued between some BCL activists of Government City College and Omar Goni MES College when they thronged at Shaheed Minar area on the occasion of the 68th founding anniversary of the party.
At one stage, both groups attacked each other at about 1:00pm, leaving 10 people injured.
Later, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Earlier, BCL men brought out rallies in the morning in different parts of the city, marking the 68th founding anniversary of BCL.
In Thakurgaon, at least 20 people suffered injuries in a clash between two factional groups of BCL in the district town at about 12:00pm.
The clash ensued at about 12:00pm when supporters of BCL rebel leader Mizan led by him attacked the procession brought out by BCL leader Rony group near Balaka Cinema Hall in the town on the occasion of the 68th founding anniversary of the party.
At one stage, a chase and counter chase took place between them as they threw brick chips at one another, leaving 20 people injured.
In Sylhet a shop employee was injured as some BCL men vandalized three shops in the city’s Rikabibazar area in the afternoon during their factional clash.
The clash erupted when the procession brought out by district unit BCL committee members faced its rebel group members in Rikabibazar area at about 2:00pm.
Later, local traders blocked a road in the area for several hours protesting the vandalism.
