Full text of Nizami’s appeal verdict released
Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday released the full text of the verdict on the appeal petition of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami against the death sentence for his participation in crimes against humanity during the Independence War in 1971.
Earlier at about 4:00pm the AD bench members, namely judges SK Sinha, Nazmun Ara Sultana, Syed Mahmud Hossain and Hazan Foez Siddique, signed the 153-page judgement.
The bench on 6 January 2016 upheld the death sentence of the Jamaat leader, who was sentenced to be hanged by International Crimes Tribunal on 29 October 2014, for murder, rape, orchestrating the killing of top intellectuals during the war.
Nizami will have 15 days after receiving the certified copy of the full text of the judgement to move forward a review petition. If a review petition is filed with the Appellate Division, the judgement will be executed after the disposal of the review petition, said Attorney General Mahbube Alam.
Accused Nizami will also get the opportunity to move a petition for presidential clemency once he receives the death warrant from the court, he added.
ASM Shahjahan said the review petition will be dropped after taking consents from the leader.
