Chittagong: Chittagong district administration on Friday distributed Tk 82.75 lakh as compensation among the family members of the persons killed and injured in the violence at Gandamara of Banshkhali upazila during protests over the construction of a coal-fired power plant there.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district Mezbahuddin handed over Tk 60 lakh to the families of the four victims who were killed in police firing during a demonstration against the power plant on April 4, according to a UNB report.

He also disbursed Tk 1 lakh each to the families of 11 victims who received serious injuries while Tk 25,000 each to the family members of 47 victims who sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Superintendent of Police of Chittagong Hafiz Akhter, Additional SP Habibur Rahman and Director of S Alam Group Shahidul Alam were, among others, present on the occasion.

Earlier on April 4, four people, including two brothers, were killed in ‘police firing’ at Gandamara village in Banshkhali upazila during a demonstration against the construction of a coal-fired power plant there.

Twenty people, including 10 cops, were also injured as the villagers clashed with the police during the demonstration.
