AL rebel candidate wins Sonatala mayoral post

Sonatala, Bogra: Awami League rebel candidate Jahangir Alam Nannu has been unofficially declared the mayor of Bogra’s Sonatala municipality.
Nannu bagged 6,454 votes bearing Coconut Tree symbol in the municipality election held on Sunday. His closest contestant, Awami League nominated Shahidul Bari Khan got 6,369 votes with Boat symbol. BNP candidate ATM Golam Rafiq’s Paddy Sheaf received only 501 votes.
District election officer Yunus Ali declared the results at about 8:00pm.
Earlier, voting began in ten municipalities at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm on Sunday.
Of the ten municipalities, by-polls were held to Naria municipality in Shariatpur and to only one ward of Singair municipality in Manikganj.
The eight other municipalities are Ghoraghat in Dinajpur, Domar in Nilphamari, Pirganj in Rangpur, Galachipa in Patuakhali, Lohagara in Narail, Ghatail in Tangail, Sonatala in Bogra and Bera in Pabna.
The EC on 29 June last declared the election schedule for the municipalities.
On 30 December last year, the last countrywide elections to over 234 municipalities out of 323 were held along political party lines for the first time in the country.
