Dhaka: Members of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed that they foiled a suicide attack attempt by holding five suicide squad members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Dhaka’s Kalyanpur area on Thursday night.

The arrestees are Atiqur Rahman alias IT Atique, Abdul Karim Bulbul alias Dr Bulbul, Abul Kalam Azad, Matiur Rahman and Shahinur Rahman Himel alias Tarek.

Tipped off, a CTTC team launched a drive at Technical Intersection at about 9:05 pm and detained the five JMB members and seized 25 detonators, 825 grams of gel from their possessions, said additional DMP commissioner Monirul Islam at a press briefing at DMP media centre on Friday.

Monirul Islam, also the chief of CTTC unit, said, ‘We had information that some militants arrived in Dhaka from the country’s northern region to carry out suicide attack in the city and a team of CTTC unit conducted the drive acting on the information, and arrested them.’

‘The information given by the arrestees during their primary interrogations will help investigate the Gulshan and Kalyanpur incidents,’ he said.

‘After interrogations, we came to know four other members of the group-Nannu, Sajib, Imran and Gipsy—also arrived in haka from the northern region, and they managed to flee,’ said the CTTC unit chief.
