Dhaka: A suspected mugger was beaten to death while two others critically injured by local people at Dhanmondi area of Dhaka South city on Monday night.

The Shahbagh police Sub-inspector Mominul Islam said a petrol police team asked a private car carrying three passengers to pull over in Paltan area on Monday night.

The private car, however, escaped from the spot violating police signal. A police car chased the private car to Dhanmondi road 3.

Later, local people and police stopped the car in Dhanmondi area. The agitated mob beat the private car passengers. Police rescued and took them to hospital in critical condition.

One of the private car passengers died undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early on Tuesday. Two others are admitted to the hospital.

Identities of the suspected muggers could not be known immediately.

The SI said they recovered four cell phones, some money pouches, and a machete from the car.
