Sylhet: A Shahjalal University of Science and Technology student was rescued by one of the university teachers while she was beaten up by her soon-to-be husband on Friday.

University authorities caught the suitor and his sister and handed them over to the police.

It was learnt that the anthropology student had a relationship with the person, a former Chittagong University graduate and now unemployed, and few months ago they got into an engagement. The girl, however, broke up the engagement and now seeing another person.

The offender, Kawser Ahmed, from Habiganj, went to the campus along with his sister in the afternoon. His sister went to the girls’ dormitory and took the girl outside her hall. As she came out Kawser started beating the girl.

Kawser and his sister forced her to get on a rickshaw while she was weeping.

University professor Shajidul Karim noticed the brawl and stopped the rickshaw and started questioning.

The sister threatened the professor not to get involved in the matter as she claimed that it was a family issue and no outsider would be allowed to interfere into the feud.

He, however, took them to the administrative building and called the police.

Following interrogation, everything revealed and the girl was repatriated to her family while Kawser and his sister were handed over to the police.

A group of students became agitated at the incident and tried to beat up Kawser. They however restrained, said Professor Rashed Taukder, acting proctor of SUST.

While connected the Officer in Charge (OC) Akter Hossain said they will take necessary steps.
