Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid on Sunday underscored the need for playing an effective role by all in further strengthening the existing communal harmony.

‘Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony. This harmony has been a tradition since the time immemorial. The people of the country have been tied with love and harmony. All must play an effective role in further strengthening this tradition,’ he said.

President Hamid said this while exchanging greetings with members of the Christian community at Bangabhaban on the occasion of Christmas Day. President’s wife Rashida Khanom was also present during the programme.

The President said this year’s Christmas celebration in Bangladesh is more joyous and festive compared to other years as Pope Francis has recently appointed a Bangladeshi cardinal.

‘This achievement will further brighten the Bangladesh’s tradition of communal harmony across the globe,’ he added.

Cardinal of Bangladesh Patrick D’ Rozario, ambassadors and representatives from different foreign missions, distinguished persons of the Christian community, religious leaders and professionals joined the reception.

A group of singers performed the Christmas carol at the reception. Later, President Abdul Hamid cut a Christmas cake with members of the Christian community.

Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahman was present on the occasion.
