Dhaka:  Traffic congestion in the capital incurs a loss of Taka 227.20 crore in a month of city dwellers, said a study report in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The loss includes Taka 204 crore for waste of time and Taka 23.10 core for fuel burn of vehicles from Airport to Postogola route, said the report on ‘State of Cities 2016-Traffic Congestion in Dhaka City-Governance Perspectives’ conducted by the BRAC University.

About 90 percent of the cost was due to time loss and other 10 per cent for additional vehicle cost which mostly in additional fuel consumption.

Lack of co-ordination among government organizations and haphazard public transport system which includes lack of provision for pedestrians and poor maintenance and management of footways are the root cause of traffic congestion in Dhaka city, the study reports detailed.

Besides, haphazard parking, more private vehicles, violation of traffic rules, faulty road construction along with various traffic in a single route, haphazard crossing, VIP movement, over population, rail crossing and fuel station are also the causes of traffic congestion in the city, it added.

Executive Director of the BRAC University Dr Sultan Hafiz Rahman gave welcome address at the function while Research Fellow of BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) Dr Shahnewaz Hossain presented the study report.

Noted urban planner Professor Nazrul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University Professor Syed Saad Anadalib and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nayeem Ahmed, among others, spoke.

Dhaka’s severe traffic congestion can be reduced significantly by improving governance and strengthening institutions responsible for traffic management, the study recommends.
