Bangladesh women storm SAFF final for first time

Dhaka: Bangladesh women's football team stormed the final of the 4th version of the SAFF Women's Championship for the first time crushing the Maldives by 6-0 goals in the second semifinal at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in the Indian town of Siliguri on Monday.

Sabina Khatun-led Bangladesh will play the final on Wednesday (Jan 4) against hosts India, the champions of all three previous meets, who smartly booked a seat for the final eliminating Nepal by 3-1 goals in the first semifinal earlier in the day.

Sirat Jahan Swapna put Bangladesh ahead in the 12th minute while she again doubled the Bangladesh margin scoring one more goal in the 23rd minute.  

Earlier in the first semis, Yumnam Devi put India ahead in the 45th minute (1-0), Indumathi Kathiresan doubled the margin in the 5th minute while Sasmita Malik sealed fate of the match scoring the 3rd goal in the 83rd minute.

Sabitra Bhandari netted the lone goal for Nepal in the 75th minute and dominated the scorer list making 12 individual goals.

The Bangladesh team, led by Sabina Khatun, stormed into the semifinal as unbeaten Group B champions after playing goalless draw with holder and hosts India on Friday following their 6-0 victory over Afghanistan, featuring five goals by the skipper Sabina Khatun.

India booked a seat for the semifinal outplaying Afghanistan by 5-1 goals after playing goalless draw Bangladesh in Group B matches.
