Only punishment can't stop crimes: Minister

Dhaka: Emphasising the imperative need for different preventive measures to tackle crimes in Bangladesh, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said crimes cannot be prevented through punishment only.

"Family and social bonding have become weak and even been separated in many places as people are running after name and fame. The trend of getting educated on social and humane values from the family and society has gone down. So we have to strengthen our family and social ties and that can cause the social crimes to take a nosedive," he said.

Anisul came up with the observations while addressing the inaugural function of a conference titled "Many Colors of Violence: Bangladesh Context" organized by Bangladesh Institute of Crime and Justice Studies (BICJS) at Bangla Academy.

Presided over by BICJS executive committee chairperson Dr Mokarram Hossain, the function was attended by Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman Miah and Prof Dr Shafikur Rahman, among others.

"The type and tactics of committing crimes are changing in the whole world with the passing of time. In Bangladesh, present government is very much committed in tackling crimes. But the society and citizens of the country too have to come forward for tackling such crimes," the law minister urged.
