SC closes in honour of Justice Ruhul Amin

Dhaka: Proceedings at both the divisions of Supreme Court (SC) were suspended for the day on Thursday from 11:00am to mourn the death of former Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin as his namaj-e-janaza was held on the court premises.

Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha yesterday announced the suspension of day's judicial functions at the Appellate and the High Court divisions of the Supreme Court as a mark of respect for Justice Amin, reports BSS.

Former Chief Justices Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury, Syed JR Mudassir Hossain, Muzammel Hossain, other judges from both the divisions of the Supreme Court, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun and other lawyers took part in the janaza at 11am, among others.

After the prayers, Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha flanked by his colleagues from both the divisions of the Supreme Court, placed wreath on the coffin of Justice Amin. Justice Amin breathed his last at a Singapore hospital on January 17 at the age of 75. He served as the 16th chief justice of Bangladesh.

He is expected to be buried at Uttara Sector-12 graveyard after Johr prayers.

Justice Amin performed his duties as the chief justice from June 1, 2008 to December 22, 2009. Justice MM Ruhul Amin was elevated to a judge of the Appellate Division on July 13, 2003. He was appointed an additional judge of the High Court on February 10, 1994 and his service was confirmed on February 8, 1996.

He also served as the chairman of Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission.

Born on December 23, 1942 in Lakkhipur district, MM Ruhul Amin earned his master's degree in history in 1963 and LLB in 1966 from Dhaka University. He joined the judicial service in 1967 and became a district judge in 1984.

Before his promotion to a HC judge, Justice Amin worked as a district and sessions judge in four districts.
