28 women suspected as Jamaat members held in Mohammadpur
Dhaka: Police held 28 women, suspecting them as members of Jamaat-e-Islami, in an apartment of Mohammadpur police station area on Thursday afternoon.
Police claimed the women were allegedly plotting sabotage against the ruling government.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumar addressed a press conference in the Mohammadpur police station at about 10:30am.
The DC said being tipped off a team police conducted a drive at an apartment in the second floor of a building in Dhaka’s Tajmahal road at about 2:30am. At first, the law enforcers knocked the door but nobody responded. Later, the apartment occupants opened the door as the police tried to break the door.
Police detained the 28 women from the apartment. Biplob Kumar said the detainees are all well-educated. Some of them are teachers of several schools, colleges, while some work as physicians.
In primary interrogation, it has been known that some of women are family members of convicted war criminals.
However, in the quizzing, few of the detainees refused to disclose their identities. They will be placed before court and will seek seven days in custody for further interrogation.
DC said police also seized several books, propaganda leaflets, and documents of their sabotage plotting from the apartment.
