Brahmanbaria: Law Minister Anisul Huq on Friday said all the upcoming elections, including the general one, will be held under the new Election Commission (EC) no matter whether BNP accepts it or not.
"The new CEC won't resign amid your (BNP's) demand. This Election Commission will be there. The next elections will be held under this EC, no matter whether you want or not," he said.
The minister was addressing a programme marking the inauguration of a mobile therapy van for the physically challenged people and distribution of wheelchairs for them at Debgram Pilot High School in Akhaura upazila.
Mentioning that the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was not picked from the list of Awami League, Anisul said the Election Commission was formed as per the Constitution and law. "The President formed the search committee with renowned personalities after discussions with political parties. He constituted the new EC from the 10 names given by the search body," he said.
Criticising the Abdul Aziz-led EC formed during the BNP rule, he said there is no need to take lesson from BNP on how to constitute an EC.
At the programme, the minister distributed 50 wheelchairs among the physically-challenged people.
