Former JMB chief among 3 indicted

Dhaka:  A Dhaka court indicted former chief of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB) Mawlana Saidur Rahman and two others in a case filed under anti-terrorism act.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Kamrul Hossain Molla started the trial of the case on Tuesday by filing charges against the accused.

Earlier, on 4 January, the court fixed Tuesday for filing charges after receiving the charge sheet. The other two accused are Abdulla Hel Kadri and Ayesha Akhter.

The Public Prosecutor (PP) Tapash Kumar Paul told NTV Online the court fixed 14 March for recording witness deposition in the case.

The case statement says police held three JMB members while planning to hold violence act at a house in Dania Nur Mosque area under Kadamtali police station in Dhaka on 25 May 2010.

Police also recovered several books from their possession. Later, a case was filed against them with Kadamtali police under anti-terrorism act.

Police filed charge sheet with Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court (CMM) against three JMB members on 7 August 2010.

Later, the case was sent to Dhaka’s Special Judge Court 6 for the trial process, where the court recorded statement of six witnesses.

However, the case was shifted to Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge court as according to law the case was not officially approved by the government.

On 8 September 2015, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge court sent a letter to government seeking its consent to run the case.

Later, on 26 August 2016 government approved the case and the court reopened the case for trial.
