BNP to launch protest prog against gas price hike: Rizvi
Dhaka: Claiming that Bangladesh’s 99 percent people have turned down the gas price hike decision, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday warned that it will come up with protest programmes against it at the right time if the government does not rescind it.
“People are showing anger across the country against the gas price hike. Notices are being issued for raising house rent and transport fare after the gas price hike announcement. The country’s 99 percent people reject it. We‘ll announce programmes against gas price hike and we’ll inform you about it in due time,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He came up with the remarks while speaking at a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office.
On behalf of BNP, Rizvi urged the government to back off from its inhuman decision of gas price hike and anti people activities.
“The government is taking anti-people decisions as it has got desperate to plunder public money. Soon after the announcement of gas price increase, the junior minister for power has declared to raise the power price as well. It’s his arrogance,” said the BNP leader.
On Thursday, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) raised the gas prices for all consumers which will come into effect in two phases.
Rizvi voiced concern over the growing incidents of killing Bangladeshis by BSF along the border. “BSF has now turned Bangladesh-India border into a butcher house,” he said criticising the government for what he said not raising its voice against the border killing by BSF and showing its subservient attitude to the neighbouring country.
About Bagerhat’s Morelganj upazila parishad election, the BNP leader said ruling party men are threatening BNP’s vice-chairman candidate Badiuzzaman and obstructing him from carrying out electioneering.
He said the local administration has not taken any action yet though complained was lodged with it. “This is the true face of the Huda-led Election Commission. No fair election is possible under the commission led by this person (Huda).”
