Abahani progress into semifinals of Fed Cup

Dhaka: Defending champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd reached in the semifinals of the Walton Federation Cup football after a 2-1 victory against Brothers Union in the 3rd quarterfinal at Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Friday.

Abahani’s forward Nabib Newaz Jibon broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute tapping the ball into the near post after a Sohel Rana’s cross from the left flank, 1-0.

The winners extended their lead in the 79th minute off a same side of Brothers defender Akramuzzaman Liton who sent the ball into his own net while trying to clear a shot of Rubel Mia, 2-0.

Congolese forward Siyo Zunapio reduced the margin for Brothers in the stopgap time after 90 minutes curving a free-kick from just outside the box into the left hand post, 2-1.

Abahani will face Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the second semi-final on June 3.

Sheikh Jamal DC was the first team to book a seat for the semi-finals eliminating Dhaka Mohammedan SC by 1-0 goal on May 24.

Chittagong Abahani Ltd reached semi-finals as the 2nd team eliminating Sheikh Russel KC by 4-2 goals at the same venue on Thursday (May 25).
