Nasir performance guides Gazi close to league crown

Dhaka: An all-round performance by national cricketer Nasir Hossain guided Gazi Group Cricketers close to the Walton Dhaka Metropolis Premier Division Cricket League title beating their nearest contenders Dhaka Abahani Limited by six wickets at BKSP ground-3 in Savar on Friday.

With the day's well-merited result, Nasir Hossain-led Gazi Group Cricketers earned the 3rd successive win in their four super league games to take a solo lead in the point table securing 24 points from 15 outings.

On the other hand, Abahani Limited went down in the race with 22 points from 15 encounters following the defeat although the team ensured three victories in the previous three matches of the super league.

In the remaining super league matches, Gazi Group Cricketers will take on Prime Doleshwar SC while Dhaka Abahani Limited will face Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, both on Monday.

Sent into bat first in the day's titans battle, Abahani Limited faced initial batting collapse and were bundled out cheaply for 156 runs in 41.2 overs.

After the departure of three top order batsmen -Saif Hasan (0), Shadman Islam (0) and Nazmul Hossain Shanta (11) -- for 27 runs in 6.4 overs, Liton Das pairing with Mohammad Mithun fought hard for their existence contributing 40 runs in the 4th stand strand.

Liton Das contributed 30 runs off 43 balls including one four and a six, Mohammad Mithun scored 48-ball 28 runs with two boundaries, number six Afif Hossan added the team highest 32 runs off 53 deliveries hitting one four and three sixes while lower order Shuvagoto Hom made 23 runs off 31 balls with three boundaries.

Mehedi Hassan and captain Nasir Hossain grabbed three wickets each conceding 30 and 36 runs respectively while Abu haider took two wickets spending 24 runs.

In reply, Gazi Group Cricketers easily chased down the tiny target scoring match-winner 157 runs for the loss of four wickets in 36.4 overs.

Captain Nasir Hossain, who grabbed three wickets fort 36 runs, against guided the team towards the victory contributing an unbeaten 56 runs off 92 balls with four boundaries and one over boundary.

Nasir was adjudged man of the match for the 3rd consecutive occasions soon after returned from Ireland.

Besides, opener Anamul Haque (41), Nadif Chowdhury not out 26 and one down Mominul Haque (21) were the other major contributors for Gazi Group Cricketers.

Manan Sharma claimed two wickets for 40 while Mohammad Saifuddin and Shuvagoto Hom took one wicket each conceding 22 and 27 runs respectively.
