Habiganj: A Habiganj court on Tuesday sentenced four people, including three siblings, to death and five others to different jail terms for killing a young man during a robbery.

The condemned convicts are Dilip Das, Samir Das and Tapu Das, sons of Lal Mohon Das, and Souramohon Das, son of Doyal Das, of Ariamugur village in Baniachang upazila.

The court also fined them Tk 1 lakh each.

The court sentenced Gonen Das and Souranga Das to three years' imprisonment while Ramu Das, Lilmohon Das and Ramcharan Das to one-year imprisonment in the case.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 and Tk 1,000 each respectively, in default, to suffer six months and three months more in jail.

According to the prosecution, the convicts swooped on a water body of Gouranga Chowdhury at Jhilua village on November 10, 2001 for looting fish.

At one stage, Gouranga, his brother Gourab Chowdhury, 30, and some other relatives resisted the bandits. Being resisted, the convicts launched an attack on them, leaving them critically injured.

Later, Gourab died on the way to Ajmiriganj Uapzila Health Complex.

The convicts also looted fish worth Tk 1.25 lakh and two engine-run boats.

A case was filed against 31 people. Police submitted a charge sheet against 33 people.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Session's Judge handed down the verdict while acquitting 25 others as the allegation brought against them could not be proved.
