A 23-year-old woman from Kannauj, UP, found with severe head injuries in south Delhi’s Pulprahladpur, India regained her memory at Batra Hospital after four months and exposed a murder plot allegedly by her husband.

The Delhi Police has now found that she had been married for two days and had come with her husband from Muzaffarnagar when the incident happened on June 13, reports the Hindustan Times.

The victim, Madhuri Chand, was found unconscious at a construction site. Police claim she had been beaten with bricks and sticks and left for dead.

Madhuri was found by some labourers and rushed to a hospital in an unconscious state. She stayed in coma for two months though her injuries healed. In August, she came out of coma but due to retrograde amnesia, she was unable to identify her attacker. She had no idea how she had reached the construction site, where the labourers had found her.

‘After two months of efforts, doctors finally succeeded and Madhuri regained her memory. Her statement was recorded and she accused Ravi Singh, alias Tinku (her husband) of attacking her,’ said Romil Baaniya, deputy commissioner of police (southeast).

On Sunday, police arrested Ravi from his village after she regained her memory and was able to identify him as her assaulter. Ravi confessed that he was in another relationship and wanted Madhuri out of the way. Police said he had married Madhuri under family pressure. Investigations revealed he brought her to Delhi under pretext of getting a job and on their second day in Delhi he attempted the murder.

‘When she fell unconscious, Tinku panicked and left the crime scene,’ the officer said. She underwent treatment for the next two months. But when the police went to record her statement, Madhuri told them that she did not remember anything related to the crime.

Baaniya said a case of attempt to murder was registered and investigators made efforts to identify the attacker. However, they could not find any eyewitness and despite their efforts no breakthrough could be made.

The case pinned on the recovery of Madhuri who was struggling hard to remember what had happened to her. A police officer privy to the probe said the doctors at the hospital did their best to help Madhuri. As she regained bits of her lost memory October 6 and named Ravi, the police swung to action and arrested him from Muzaffarnagar on Sunday.
