Customs official hurt in ‘accidental’ firing
Dhaka: A customs officer sustained bullet injuries in an 'accidental' shooting by a security officer of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport here on Sunday.
Airport sources said Federica Mogherini arrived here to visit Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar and discuss the Rohingya issue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and representatives of humanitarian organisations.
Along with her three security officers, including Francois Xavier Gutierrez Rodriguez, she landed at the airport by a flight of Emirates Airlines at about 9:40am.
As per the existing rules, firearms of the three security officials were handed over to the airlines authorities before the boarding at the starting airport. Later, those were handed over to the customs at the Dhaka airport, said the sources.
After scrutinising legal documents, the customs officials handed over the firearms to the security officials at the airport, reports news agency UNB.
The firing incident took place at about 10:00am as Rodriguez was examining his gun when a bullet came out of it and hit Customs Revenue Officer Rabiul in one of his legs, said Senior ASP Tarique Ahmed, media officer of Airport Armed Police (AAP).
Rabiul was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, he said.
The customs officials seized Rodriguez's firearm although they later allowed him to go on completion of necessary formalities, Tarique said.
