Mentioning that the Prime Minister has assigned him to salvage the ‘sinking telecom sector’, newly appointed Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar on Saturday expressed the hope that he will succeed in the job using his vast experience.

‘I’ve 30 years of experience in the telecommunication and information technology sector. I hope I’ll be successful in doing so using my experience. If I succeed, the Prime Minister will also succeed,’ he said.

He was talking to reporters after paying tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman placing wreaths at his grave at Tungipara in Gopalganj in the morning, reports the UNB.

Turning to loss-making state telecom operator Teletalk, the minister said private companies are doing businesses here using government’s frequency and bandwidth, and Teletalk can do so, too. ‘Why cannot we do business? I think there’s a flaw somewhere or those in the management could not take decision.’

He also said he will first identify the problems. ‘There’s no reason to fail. I think we can do business if we can identify the failures,’ he said.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood, Gopalganj District Council Chairman Chowdhury Emdadul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Jahangir Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Tareque, district Awami League General Secretary Mahbub Ali Khan were, among others, present.
