Construction workers protest price spiral of building materials

Imarat Nirman Sramik Union Bangladesh (INSUB), a platform of construction workers, on Wednesday formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club here protesting price hike of construction materials.
Claiming construction industry as a significant sector, the protesters urged the government to protect the industry through reducing the prices of construction materials, reports the UNB.
Speaking as the chief guest, General Secretary of JSD Nazmul Haque Prodhan said the sudden price hike of building materials is unexpected.
Demanding action against syndicates who are responsible for the price spiral, he also urged the government to control the price hike ahead of Ramadan, Eid and election.
Special guest Dr Wazedul Islam Khan said development of the country is not possible leaving construction workers behind.
Speakers said construction workers are losing their jobs due to the price hike of construction materials and the industry is being affected as well.
Price of rod has become Tk 72000 from Tk 50000 each ton, cement price gas been increased by about Tk 370 to 470 each bag while the price of per thousand bricks and per truck sand saw an increase of Tk 500 recently, said the speakers adding that about 50 percent of the construction workers may lose their jobs in the coming monsoon as construction work and projects are getting affected due to price rise.
