1100 maunds of chemically-ripened mangoes destroyed

A mobile court of the Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday destroyed around 1100 maunds of mangoes and jailed six traders at the Mazar Road area of Mirpur-1 in the city for using harmful chemicals to ripen the fruits.
Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam conducted the drive along with members of RAB-4 from 5:30am and it was continued till 4:30pm, said second-in-command of the Rab-4 battalion Maj Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed, reports the UNB.
The mangoes were not naturally matured, and chemicals were used making the fruits harmful for consumers’ health, Maj Saifuddin said.
The magistrate sentenced the six traders with different jail terms from three months to one year, he said.
