Khulna: Five people were killed and 14 others injured when a bus plunged into a ditch filled with rainwater on Khulna-Satkhira road at Bortia in Dumuriaupazila on Thursday.

Three of the deceased are Shahinur Gazi, 40, son of Ohid Gazi, Shariful Islam, 35, son of Lutfar Rahman and Mostafa Gazi, 35, residents of Kalna village in Koyra upazila.

Habil Hossain, officer-in-charge of Dumuria Police Station, said the Khulna-bound bus from Paikgaccha upazila fell into the ditch while overtaking another bus around 12:45 pm, leaving five people dead on the spot and 14 others injured.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Khulna Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.

The injured were taken to a local hospital.
