Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday laid the foundation stone of an underpass at a road adjacent to Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College in the city.

The underpass will be built as per the Prime Minister’s commitment she made after two students of the college were killed in a recent road crash.

Bangladesh Army will implement the project, reports the UNB.

On July 29, Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, first-year students of the college, were killed as a bus ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road in the capital.

The family members of the two students and the principal of the college met the Prime Minister on August 2.

During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina promised to construct an underpass nearby the Ramiz Uddin College and provide five buses for its students. On August 4, the Prime Minister provided the five buses.

The underpass is expected to help pedestrians, particularly the students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin School and College, patients of Kurmitola General Hospital, residents of Baridhara DOHS and people working in many military and civil organisations in the adjacent areas, to cross the busy road safely.

The 43-metre long underpass with two bus bays and 500-metre footpath will have special arrangements for cyclist and persons with disabilities.

The 24 Engineering Construction Brigade of Bangladesh Army will construct the underpass with a government fund of Tk 54 crore within one year.
