Joypurhat: A suspected drug trader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Taushara in Khetlal upazila early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Tofazzal Hossain alias Wazed, 37, son of late Wadud Sarker, a resident of Uttar Maheshpur Sarkar Para village. He was accused in 12/13 drug cases, reports the UNB.

Assistant superintendent of Police Md Azmal Hossain, commanding officer of Joypurhat Rab-5, said that on secret information, a team of Rab conducted a drive in the area around 1:45am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug traders opened fire them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight that left Wazed injured with bullet.

The injured was taken to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

The team recovered a pistol, one round bullet, bullet-shell, a magazine and 150 bottles of phensidyl.

Two Rab members were also injured.
