Cox’s Bazar: A suspected female Rohingya drug trader was killed in an alleged gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troopers in Teknaf upazila early Sunday.

The deceased woman, 22-year-old Romana Akhter, hailed from Akyab in Myanmar and lived in number 6 camp of block c in Teknaf’s Leda camp, reports the UNB.

BGB said one of their patrols ordered a boat to stop in Omarkhali Point of Naf River around 4am.

‘Drug traders, hiding on the boat, first fired shots at the BGB team,’ said Shariful Islam Jammadder, acting commander of Teknaf BGB-2.

‘When our team approached the boat, the drug traders attacked them with sharp weapons, forcing our men to fire back in self-defence,’ he said.

The acting commander claimed the drug traders fled the scene after the skirmish.

‘The body of the female drug trader, 10,000 yaba pills and two sharp weapons were recovered from the boat after the gunfight,’ Shariful added.
