Ban killer robots before they take over, scientists warn

Dhaka: A global ban on developing artificially intelligent robot soldiers is needed to protect the future of mankind, a letter from hundreds of leading scientists including Stephen Hawking has warned, reported ITV.
More than 1,000 scientists and businessmen signed the open letter from the Future of Life Institute, calling on world leaders to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) technology from being used in a ‘global arms race’.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and SpaceX entrepreneur Elon Musk were also among the signatories of the letter, presented at a major conference in Argentina.
The letter warns that developing weapons beyond existing remote control drones, which could ‘think’ for themselves without human input, is ‘feasible within years’ — and have the potential to become the ‘Kalashnikovs of tomorrow’.
Launching a question and answer session on Reddit on the topic of AI, Prof Hawking said it was vital that scientists at the forefront of the technology keep the ‘human factor’ at the ‘front and centre’ of developments.
While there is significant potential benefit to be gained from AI, the letter says — including eradicating disease and poverty, and potentially making warzones safer for civilians — it would also make murder, genocide and terrorism much easier to carry out and much more difficult to stop.
If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable, and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow.
Autonomous weapons are ideal for tasks such as assassinations, destabilising nations, subduing populations and selectively killing a particular ethnic group. We therefore believe that a military AI arms race would not be beneficial for humanity.
‘We believe that AI has great potential to benefit humanity in many ways, and that the goal of the field should be to do so. Starting a military AI arms race is a bad idea, and should be prevented by a ban on offensive autonomous weapons beyond meaningful human control’ – open letter.
Prof Hawking has previously warned that AI could spell the ‘end of the human race’.
