BPL: Dispirited Vikings concede 5th defeat
Chittagong: Downhearted Chittagong Vikings conceded 5th defeat in their 6th match of the 3rd Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) losing to Ragpur Riders by 9 wickets at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Tuesday.
This was Chittagong Vikings’ fourth successive defeat in the league.
To secure their 4th victory in the league, Rangpur Riders needed an easy score of 112 runs and they reached the destination scoring 113 runs for 1 in 17 overs spurred by the opening stand for 102 runs in 15.3 overs between Soumya Sarkar and Jahurul Islam.
Soumya who hit unbeaten 58 off 56 balls featuring eight fours and one six drew the winning line hammering a four in the last ball off
Tillakaratne Dilshan. Later, he was adjudged man of the match.
Jahurul Islam scored 47 off 44 balls with four fours and one six before being caught by Tamim Iqbal off a Shafiul Islam delivery.
Shafiul Islam took the only wicket for 22 runs in 2 overs.
Earlier, batting first after winning the toss in the 2nd leg’s 2nd day’s match, Chittagong Vikings scored a meager 111 for 8 in 20 overs riding on the opening stand of 39 runs in 6.5 overs between skipper Tamim Iqbal and Tillakaratne Dilshan.
Dashing opener Tamim scored the highest 36 off 43 balls with two fours and was caught by Thisara Perera off a Mohammad Nabi delivery at 83 for 4 in 13.2 overs.
Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 18 off 19 balls with three fours while number seven batsman Naeem Islam hit run-a-ball unbeaten 16 with one four.
Anamul Haque (14 off 11b; 1x6) and Kamran Akmal (12 off 7b; 1x4, 1x6) were the other double digit scorers for Vikings.
Bowling 4 overs each, skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Arafat Sunny grabbed 2 wickets each for 16 and 27 runs respectively.
Saqlain Sajib, Mohammad Nabi and Thisara Perera took one wicket each conceding 10, 18 and 19 runs in 1, 4 and 3 overs respectively.
With this result, Rangpur Riders earned 8 points from 6 matches with 4 wins and 2 losses while Chittagong Vikings secured 2 points from as many matches with 5 losses and one win.
