In one of the most bizarre but thrilling finishes to a cricket match, a 54-year-old player smacked a mind-boggling 40 runs in the last over to win the game for his side.

An English village team named Dorchester-on-Thames pulled off an unlikely win in the Division Four Oxfordshire Cricket Association match with Swinbrook, with the 54-year-old Steve McComb being the star performer, according to cricket.com.au.

It looked all but over for Dorchester-on-Thames when they landed in a position requiring 35 runs to be scored off the final six balls of the match, but McComb’s extraordinary feat registered one of the most stunning victories ever.

The chasing team was benefitted by a no-ball first up, which was smacked for a six. The next legit ball was hit out of the park once again, bringing down the equation to 22 needed off five balls.

The bowler, Mihai Cucos managed a dot on the next delivery which left McComb to go all out with his side needing 22 off four balls. McComb smashed the next ball for a four, and once again a no-ball allowed him to get an additional four runs. The two no-balls truly hurt the chances of winning for Swinbrook.

With 13 needed off the last three balls, the batsman went on to hit two consecutive sixes to take his side on the brink of a famous victory. With one more run needed to be scored, McComb decided to go for his shot again, and sealed the victory with another six, thus collecting 40 runs in the over.

The club’s Twitter handle announced they had scored 41 runs, but clarified that it was an error later on.

McComb told BBC, ‘It was an amazing end to the game. 240 is a tough target to chase in our league and we never looked ahead of the rate. I had nothing to lose in the final over and the boundaries weren’t huge, so I knew there was a slim chance.’

‘I’ve had an arthritic ankle for many years and I can’t run very well between the wickets, as the lads constantly remind me, so I either try to score a boundary or hop for a single. When they brought the field in for the final ball I knew if I got bat on ball we’d be OK,’ he added.
