Cricket inspires lesser events to look forward

Dhaka: Though our cricketers remained at top whereas sports success is concerned, our sports arena also witnessed some positive headline in other events.

Bangladesh sports arena is lucky enough as our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is a great patron of sports.

Sheikh Hasina has funded almost all the sports events with open hand enabling lesser events, competitors to show their mettle at international level.

Prime Minister has inspired our female sports personalities to come forward and our Snow Queen Wasfia Nazreen is an example as she set an example by becoming the first mountaineer from Bangladesh to conquer seven peaks of the world.

Success seems to follow good looking Wasifa Nazreen as she considered by National Geographic as their Adventurers of the Year. A very educated and beautiful lady Wasifa on her Facebook profile mentioned that she had reached the summit of Carstensz Pyramid, the highest mountain of Oceania.

The 4,884-metre peak in Indonesia's Papua Province is locally known as Puncak Jaya and entails the "most consistently steep and technical climbing of all the seven summits", the post said.

She dedicated the completion of the four-year campaign to the "spirit of '71 and all those who are fighting to protect it", the Facebook post added.

She climbed the Mount Everest on May 26, 2012, the second woman from Bangladesh to do so. Before that, she had already conquered Africa's Kilimanjaro and South America's Aconcagua. In other expeditions Wasfia made it to the top of Antarctica's Vinson Massif, Europe's Mount Elbrus and North America's Denali.

National Geographic selected her as one of the adventurers of 2014. While disappointments were aplenty, there were still reasons to be hopeful.

The stories of the Bangladesh U-14 girls and the U-16 boys football team provided reasons to smile. The teams collected the SAFF championships this year.

In addition, Mabia Akter Simanta received gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship; and so did Tamimul Islam who topped the Recurve Bow event at the Youth Commonwealth Archery Championships. However, these small enterprising achievements will inspire other then cricket to come to come forward and keep our flag flying high international events.
