Dhaka: South Africa were 298/1 at stumps on day 1 in their 1st innings of the first Test against Bangladesh at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday.

Sent in to bat first, South Africa played 90 overs for their first day's collection where opener Dean Elgar was at the crease completing his 9th Test century with a score of 128* off 285 balls, including 9 boundaries.

Hashim Amla was pairing Elgar in the 2nd wicket stand with a half century of 68* off 103 balls, including 7 boundaries and one six, when the bails were drawn for the day.

The Tigers fought hard to get the day's only wicket of Proteas, that too through a run-out as opening batsman Aiden Markram fell just three runs short of a century on debut.

He fell just before tea, facing 152 balls and smashing 13 boundaries, with the team score on 196 off 54.2 overs.

Facing Mehedi Hasan Miraz's off spin, Elgar in playing the shot took a few paces down the pitch. Markram responded too eagerly from bowling end and was nearly halfway down the pitch before he had to turn back.

Mominul Haque swooped down on the ball and threw it to Mehedi who whipped the bails off.

After the departure of Markram, experienced Hashim Amla came to crease to pair Elgar.

Brief Score:

South Africa 1st innings: 298/1 in 90 overs, at stumps; Dean Elgar 128*, Aiden Markram 97 Hashim Amla 68*
