Sylhet seal thrilling victory against Comilla

Sylhet: Sylhet Sixers maintained their upbeat note in the 5th Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as they beat Comilla Victorians by four wickets at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Sunday for their second consecutive win in the seven-team meet.

Upul Tharanga clinched the 2nd successive man of the match title as the first player in this edition tournament, scoring 51 runs of 40 balls.

The Sri Lankan left-hand batsman played an unbeaten innings of 69 while West Indian batsman Andre Fletcher scored 63 in Sylhet Sixers' emphatic nine-wicket victory against defending champions Dhaka Dynamites in the tournament opener on Saturday.

In their 2nd match, Sylhet Sixers chased down a target of 146 runs scoring 148 for 6 in 19.5 overs where Tharanga shared a partnership of 73 off 8.4 overs with Fletcher in the opening stand to register his back-to-back half century.

Nurul Hasan fired a boundary in 19.5 over to draw the winning line on his way to unbeaten 11 off 3 balls, also including a six.

Tharanga hit five boundaries and two sixes in his innings before falling victim of run out on 102/3 in 14th over while Fletcher was caught by Rashid Khan off Dwayne Bravo after scoring 36 off 29 balls, including five boundaries and two sixes, to depart from the opening pair.

Skipper Nasir Hossain (18 off 20b; 2x4) and Ross Whiteley (10 off 14b) were the other double digit scorers for the side.

Dwayne Bravo bagged two wickets for 24 runs in 3.5 overs while Rashid Khan and skipper Mohammad Nabi took one wicket each for 18 and 22 runs.

Earlier, sent in to bat first, Victorians scored 145 for 6 in 20 overs riding on Marlon Samuels's half century of 60 runs.

MN Samuels faced 47 balls to fire two boundaries and three over-boundaries before being caught by all-rounder skipper Nasir Hossain off Liam Plunkett, leaving team collection at 137/6 in 19.1 overs.

In the 4th wicket stand, Jamaican batsman Samuels shared a partnership of 42 off 6.1 overs with Alok Kapali to carry their team collection to 86/4 in 13.2 overs, starting from 44/3 in 7.1 overs.

Kapali was caught by Sabbir Rahman off Krishmar Santokie after scoring 26 off 19 balls, including one boundary and two sixes, while Liton Kumar Das (21 off 19b; 2x4; 1x6), Imrul Kayes (12 off 11b; 2x4) and Dwayne Bravo (11* off 9b; 1x6) were the other double digit scorers for the side.

Sixers spinner Taijul Islam and Jamaican pacer Krishmar Santokie bagged two wickets each for 22 and 30 runs respectively. Nasir Hossain bowled out Imrul Kayes to get one conceding 18 runs while Liam Plunkett conceded 31 runs for one. All the bowlers delivered four overs each.

Sylhet Sixers started the seven-team tournament upsetting defending champions Dhaka Dynamites by nine wickets in the opener at the same venue on Saturday. However, this was Comilla Victorians' 1st encounter in the tournament.
