Khulna register maiden win beating Sylhet

Sylhet: A match-winning unbeaten knocks by Michael Klinger and Carlos Brathwaite steered Khulna Titans to register a six-wicket victory over table toppers Sylhet Sixers in the 8th match of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 held on Wednesday at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

It was a maiden victory for Khulna after their 65-run defeat against Dhaka Dynamites in their first match while Sylhet Sixers suffered their first defeat in the tournament following their three consecutive wins.

The Australian right handed batsman Klinger scored 36-ball of 47 runs studded with five boundaries and shared 45-run sixth wicket stand with West Indies batsman Carlos (16-ball) to guide Khulna towards their target making 138 runs with 12 balls to spare after Sylhet Sixers set a winning target of 136 runs. Carlos hammered two towering sixes during his 16-ball stay on the crease. Mahmuullah (27) and Rilee Rossouw (19) were the other notable scorers for Khulna.

Taijul Islam was the most successful bowler for Sylhet as he grabbed three Khulna's wickets giving away 19 runs.

Earlier, Sylhet Sixers posted a small total of 135 for 5 from their allotted 20 overs, after they were invited to bat first by Khulna Titans.

All-rounder Nasir Hossain played an unbeaten innings of 47 off 35 balls, including five boundaries.

He also shared a partnership of 47 runs with Ross Whiteley (27 off 23 balls), after Sylhet suffered early batting jolt losing their two top order batsmen early.

The Sri Lankan opener Upul Tharanga (26 off 24 balls) however held his nerve up to 8.1 overs before he perished to Mahmudullah Riyad while Gunathilaka (26 off 25 balls) was the other Sylhet batsmen who able to reach the double digits.

Mahmudullah and Jofra Archer bagged two wickets each for 12 and 25 runs respectively while Shafiul Islam captured one for 20 runs.

The second phase of BPL will begin from Saturday (November 11) at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
