Mominul, Simmons shore Rajshahi’s first victory in BPL

Dhaka: Rajshahi Kings secured their maiden victory in the fifth Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 as they crushed Rangpur Riders by eight wickets in their 3rd match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 135 runs, Rajshahi reached their destination scoring 138 for 2 in 16.4 overs where Mominul Haque and Lendl Simmons shared a partnership of 122 off 15.2 overs in the opening stand, including their individual fifty.

Rony Talukdar hammered a boundary off country's veteran spinner Abdur Razzak in the last ball of the match to touch the winning line.

Man of the match Mominul played till the end for 63* off 44 balls, including four boundaries and three over-boundaries, while Simmons stayed for 53 off 50 balls, including four boundaries and one six, before being victim of run out to depart from opening pair.

Rony Talukdar added unbeaten 10* off 4 balls with two boundaries while Malcolm Waller (4) was bowled out by Thisara Perera on 127/2 in 15.5 overs.

Perera got the only wickets for 12 runs in two overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Rangpur ended on 134 for 5 in 20 overs riding on the only praiseworthy partnership of 49 off 9 overs between Ravi Bopara and Shahriar Nafees in the 4th wicket stand.

Rangpur suffered a quick top-order fall, losing 3 wickets for 33 in 4 overs from where Bopara-Nafees pair started their composures in the 4th wicket to carry the team total to 82/4 in 13 overs before Nafees was caught by Malcolm Waller off Kesrick Williams.

On the way to his half century of 54 off 51 balls, including three boundaries and two sixes, Bopara shared another partnership of 40* off 4.2 overs with Ziaur Rahman in the unbeaten 6th pair for their final collection, starting from 94/5 in 15.4 overs.

Nafees was out for 23 off 31 balls, including two boundaries, while Mohammad Mithun (18 off 15b; 2x4; 1x6) and Ziaur (11* off 10b; 1x6) were the other double digit scorers for the side.

Farhad Reza got two wickets for 28 runs while James Franklin, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Kesrick Williams took one wicket each for 14, 19 and 34 runs respectively.

Rangpur started the tournament campaign with six wickets win against Rajshahi the side found the same side to take the sweet revenge on the day with their maiden victory in the seven-team tournament. Rajshahi lost their 2nd game against Sylhet Sixers by 33 runs.

With the day's result, Rangpur conceded the 2nd successive loss after 11 runs defeat against Chittagong Vikings.
