Abahani beat Mohammedan in prestige battle

Dhaka: In a prestige battle, defending champions Dhaka Abahani Limited beat their traditional rivals Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club by 2-0 goals in a 14th round match of the Saif Power Battery Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football at the floodlit Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Wednesday.

After the match, both Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Dhaka Abahani Ltd secured 30 points each from 13 and 14 matches, but Sheikh Jamal DC were in the 2nd slot by virtue of better goal difference.

Chittagong Abahani Ltd comfortably dominated the league table securing 35 points from 14 matches while Dhaka Mohammedan SC remained at 6th slot with their previous credit of 17 points from 14 encounters.

Meritorious striker Sunday Chizoba scored for the popular sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit, one in each half.

Sunday put Abahani Ltd ahead in the 45th minute from a penalty (1-0) and confirmed the team victory adding more goal in the 72nd minute by a spectacular header from close, utilising a left cross from his teammate (2-0).

Referee Azad Rahman announced his retirement on Wednesday during the match from conducting the competitive soccer matches.
