Rampant Bangladesh U19 emerge group champion
Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team recorded an overwhelming eight-wicket victory over Namibia to emerge group A champions in the ICC U19 World Cup 2016 held on Tuesday at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox's Bazar.
Earlier, the young Bangladeshi spinners tore apart Namibian batting lineup, restricting them to just 65 runs in 32.5 overs, after Bangladesh skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz decided to field first.
The Bangladesh's bowlers threatened early inroad as medium pacer Mohammad Saifuddin dismissed opener Loftie-Eaton struck in the fourth over of the match. The batsman tried to guide the ball, short of length outside off, through gully but straight to Nazmul Hossain Shanto at second slip. Shanto took the catch spectacularly jumping to his right.
In the sixth over, Namibian skipper Zane Green was run out without disturbing the scoreboard. Later, spinners took control of the match with Saleh Ahmed Shawon, skipper Miraz, who is now the highest wicket taker at U19 level, and Ariful Islam taking two wickets apiece, while Saeed Sarkar captured one wicket.
Skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz bagged two wickets for 12 runs in 7.5 overs to complete the highest 74-wicket haul journey in Youth ODI.
Two Namibian batsmen- Niko Davin and Lohan Louwrens - able to reach the double figure in the match.
To chase the paltry target of 66 runs, Bangladesh however lost both openers in just 13 runs, but a brilliant 53-run unbeaten partnership between Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Joyraz Sheik took Bangladesh at home at ease in 16 overs.
Saleh Ahmed Shawon of Bangladesh was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant bowling performance.
ICC full member Bangladesh and ICC associate member Namibia confirmed the Cup quarterfinal berth from Group A before the match and locked horn with each other to be the group champions with all win record.
Bangladesh will meet Group D runners-up Nepal in the first quarterfinal on 5 February at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium while Namibia will face Group D champions India in the second quarterfinal final on 6 February at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah.
Bangladesh Youth team smartly booked a seat for the last eight crushing holders South Africa by 43 runs in the opening match on Wednesday and outplayed ICC associate member Scotland by a huge margin of 144 runs on Sunday, featuring a record breaking performance by Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who scored an unbeaten 113 runs.
On the other hand, Namibia made a good start crushing Scotland by nine wickets on Friday and confirmed the quarterfinal berth eliminating holders South Africa by two wickets on Sunday.
