Wellington, New Zealand: Australia were 147-3 at stumps in reply to New Zealand's 183 on the opening day of the first Test in Wellington on Friday.
Steve Smith made 71 and Usman Khawaja was not out 57.
New Zealand were all out for 183 just before tea.
Mark Craig top-scored for New Zealand with 41 not out while Corey Anderson made 38.
For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took four for 42, Nathan Lyon three for 32 and Peter Siddle three for 37.
