Dhaka: The West Indies made history by winning their first ever title in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup surprising three-time champion India by five wickets in the final at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.

Keacy Carty and Keemo Paul’s unbeaten 6th wicket stand of 69 guided the West Indians to surprise mighty Indian in the 11th edition of the global youth cricket final.

This is the first time the West Indian juniors tasted the title of the World Youth Cricket since its inception in 1988.

On their way to the final battle, the West Indies eliminated the host Bangladesh from the race beating in the semifinal by 3-wicket while upset the two-time champion Pakistan by 5-wicket in the quarterfinals.

The West Indies confirmed their quarterfinal berth as Group-C runners-up securing four points including two wins and one loss, despite they started their tournament campaign conceding a 61-run defeat against England.

However, Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz who set the milestone of the highest 74-wicket haul record during their 3rd and last Group-A match of the tournament against Namibia on Tuesday (February 2), was adjudged players of the series.

Miraz set the record leapfrogging the Pakistani bowler Imad Wasim's record of 73-wicket. To make the mark Miraz bagged two wickets for 12 runs in 7.5 overs against Namibia.

In the day’s final, chasing an easy target of 146, the West Indies touched the winning stone with 146/5 in 49.3 overs, spurred by unbeaten 6th wicket contribution of 69 runs in 20.3 overs between Keacy Carty and Keemo Paul.

Starting from 77/5 in 29 overs, the 6th pair carried the team total to the winning score.

Carty, who was adjudged man of the match, made an unbeaten half century of 52 off 125 balls including two fours while Paul stayed for another unbeaten 40 off 68 balls with one boundary and one six.

Skipper Shimron Hetmyer (23 off 53b; 1x4) and Tevin Imlach (15 off 20b; 2x4) were other scorers for the West Indies.

Mayank Dagar grabbed three wickets for 25 runs in 10 overs while Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed took one wicket each for 29 and 32 runs.

Sent in to bat first, Indian juniors were allout for a meager 145 in 45.1 overs with Sarfaraz Khan's half century of 51 off 89 balls including five fours and one six.

Number-5 batsman Sarfaraz was trapped lbw by Ryan John at 120/8 in 38.1 overs.

Rahul Batham scored 21 off 31 balls with three boundaries while Mahipal Lomror was another double figure scorer with 19 off 43 balls including two boundaries.

Delivering 10 overs each, Ryan John and Alzarri Joseph grabbed three wickets for 38 and 39 runs. Keemo Paul took two wickets for economic 17 runs in 6.1 overs. Chemar Holder and Shamar Springer took one wicket each for 20 and 24 runs.
