Miraz wins player of the tournament award
Dhaka: Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket team captain Mehedi Hasan Miraz was adjudged player of the tournament for his brilliance performance in the just concluded 16-nation ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup hosted by Bangladesh.
The announcement came after the final of the tournament between the West Indies and India at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur on Sunday.
Apart from his outstanding leadership, the 18-year-old all-rounder from Khulna scored 242 runs, including four fifties, at an average of 60.5 and grabbed 12 wickets at an average of 17.66 in the mega event to get the player of the tournament award.
The West Indies made history by winning their first title in the world youth cricket tournament surprising three-time champions India by five wickets in the final.
Miraz led the Young Tigers in the world youth cricket for the consecutive 2nd time including this 11th edition.
Under his guidance, Bangladesh placed third for the first time in any format and level of global cricket as well as materialised their first-ever semifinal berth in the tournament.
As a captain, Miraz achieved the milestone of leading the Young Tigers in nine wins in the U19 Cricket World Cup history breaking the previous record of eight wins by Australian cricketer Geoffrey Ross Parker in 28 years back.
Parker led the Australian side as captain for eight wins in the 1988 Youth World Cup while leading the Youth Tigers' in the world stage for the 2nd time in a row, Miraz won nine games out of 10.
Miraz set the mark with a six-wicket win against Nepal in the first quarterfinal of the 11th edition of the tournament at SBNCS on 5 February.
Besides, Miraz set another milestone of highest 74-wicket getter record during their 3rd and last Group-A match of the tournament against Namibia on 2 February.
He set the record leapfrogging the Pakistani bowler Imad Wasim's record of 73 wickets.
