Playing their natural game will benefit the team the most, says Bangladesh captain ahead of two-Test series against the Windies.
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has backed his teammates to adapt to the Caribbean conditions quickly as they prepare to take on the Windies in a two-Test series, the first of which starts on Wednesday, 4 July, reports icc-cricket.com.
The Windies, who recently drew a three-Test series 1-1 against Sri Lanka at home, are expected to have pitches that assist their pacers, led by Shannon Gabriel, who picked up 20 wickets in the three games against the Sri Lankans.
Shakib, however, is not too fussed about the kind of pitches on offer. ‘There is lot more grass than on normal Caribbean wickets,’ he said of the track in North Sound, the venue for the first Test.
‘I think the boys are up for the challenge as this wicket will have good pace and carry and hopefully we can adapt to the conditions.’
Bangladesh have played just one warm-up game, a two-day affair against a Cricket West Indies President’s XI in which Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah scored centuries.
‘We already spent a week here so we are getting used to the climate here, played a two-day game and the practice session are going well,’ pointed out Shakib. ‘I think the boys are prepared enough to take on the challenge.’
Asking his players to play the way they are most comfortable with, Shakib added, ‘I want my teammates not to worry too much about the wicket and just try to play their natural game and that will be good enough for the team.’
Bangladesh come into the series with not much international cricket behind them. They did play a three-match Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan in Dehradun in early June, but not much before that.
But Shakib isn’t worried about that. ‘We had a very good break. Obviously we haven’t played much cricket during the last two-three months. But we had very good preparation back at home,’ he said.
‘We watched it (Windies v Sri Lanka) on the TV and it was a competitive one for both the teams. It is another series for us and we are looking forward to it.’
