Dhaka: Bangladesh fought back well on a chase of 272 runs against the host West Indies, but failed to manage requiring eight runs in the last over, conceding a three-runs defeat in the second ODI of the three-match series at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Wednesday.
West Indies kept the hope alive, leveling the series 1-1 with the victory in the second game on the day after a 48-run defeat in the first game at the same venue on July 22, reports the UNB.
West Indies captain Jason Holder bowled one of the best last overs to pull his team out of a hole as conceded just four runs to stay alive in the series.
Holder started the last over by removing the visitors top-scorer Mushfiqur Rahim [68 off 67b; 5x4; 1x4], who hit a full-toss straight to deep midwicket and was caught by Keemo Paul, then contained Mosaddek Hossain [3* off 4b] and skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza [1* off 1b] to just four runs off the next five balls to finish Bangladesh at 268 for 6 in 50 overs.
After a stunning 43-over 207 second-wicket partnership in the 1st ODI, opener Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan again paired in the second-wicket of the second game for another praiseworthy figure of 97 off 24.3 overs with their individual fifties.
In the first ODI, Tamim hit unbeaten 130 while Shakib 97 runs.
Tamim [54 off 85b; 6x4] and Shakib [56 off 72b; 5x4] started their partnership after the dismissal of Anamul Haque [23 off 9b] on 32/1 in 2.3 overs and ended on 129/2 in the 25th over as Tamim was stumped by keeper Shai Hope off spinner Devendra Bishoo.
Mushfiqur came in the 3rd wicket and stayed well, but Shakib failed for another long partnership as the all-rounder was caught by Keemo Paul off Ashley Nurse on 145/3 in the 2nd ball of 30th over.
Mushfiqur continued with Mahmudullah Riyad [39 off 51b; 2x6] and shared an 87 off 16.5 overs in the 4th wicket before Mahmudullah was run out on 232/4 in 45.1 overs.
Adding a double digit, Sabbir Rahman[12 off 11b; 1x4] came and went on 264/5 in 49th before the thrilling of last over -- requiring eight runs and last the ball needed a five runs with Mashrafe was staying at the batting end -- which started with Mushfiqur’s dismissal at 264/6 in 49.1 overs.
There was nothing surprising from Windies bowling department before the last over thrill, as Ashley Nurse (1/34), Devendra Bishoo (1/39), Keemo Paul (1/43), Alzarri Joseph (1/55) skipper Jason Holder (1/66), who extracted sweet revenge after being conceded a 62-run from his nine previous overs with grabbing Mushfiqur in the l0th over, equally shared one wicket each for the side.
Sent in to bat first, West Indies scored 271 for all in 49.3 overs with man of the match Shimron Hetmyer [125 off 93b; 3x4; 7x6] hammering a century before being run-out on their final collection.
Making the 1st breakthrough by Mashrafe to have Evin Lewis on 29/1 in 6.1 overs, Bangladesh tackled Windies batters well up to the 102/4 in 23.5 overs, but Hetmyer and Rovman Powell [44 off 67b; 4x4] shared a comeback fight in the 5th wicket with their contribution of 103 off 19.2 overs before pacer Rubel Hossain bowled out Powell at 205/5 in 42.1 overs.
Opener Chris Gayle [29 off 38b; 3x4; 1x6], Shai Hope [25 off 43b; 3x4], Jason Mohammed [12] and Evin Lewis [12] were the other double digit scorers for the host side.
Rubel Hossain captured three wickets for 61 runs in nine overs while Mustafizur Rahman (2/44) and Shakib (2/45) equally shared four wickets. Mashrafe (1/44) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1/40) got one wicket each.
Bangladesh and West Indies will play the series decider 3rd ODI at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts on July 28 at 7:30pm (Bangladesh time).
